What’s the first session like?

In the first session my main focus is to get to know you and to gain a clear understanding of why you are seeking therapy. The first session also gives you the chance to meet me and to decide if I am the right therapist for you. I will guide you through the expectations of therapy whilst also explaining the important bits, like confidentiality.

What will we work on?

I am client-led which means that I will ask you what you want to work on. Some of my clients arrive with a specific goal in mind, whereas others come to therapy with no clear or fixed outcome; Either is a great start!

We might have general discussions about how you're feeling. We might also talk about things like current and past relationships, your childhood & situations or events that you find challenging.

Try to be kind to yourself if it takes time to get used to having therapy. If you're finding it hard to feel comfortable, it may help to bring this to a session so that we can explore this together. This might feel daunting, but it may help to increase your sense of connection because you've been able to be honest.

Phone calls are free of charge, however I ask for payment in advance of £5 to secure an in person initial appointment.

All subsequent appointments are charged at £50 per 50 minute session. Online counselling is charged at £38 per 50 minute session.

About Laura

I am passionate about how counselling, psychology, and psychotherapy practice can contribute to progressive social change. Counselling values, like compassion, empathy, and acceptance, are powerfully aligned with a progressive valuing of others.

I began my career nearly 20 years ago as a Youth Worker in Portsmouth. In these formative years of my career I engaged with gang members, perpetrators of crime, violent offenders, and those victimised by them, as well as those facing multiple other challenges. I quickly understood the power of empathy and unconditional positive regard in encouraging positive and meaningful change.

My experience expanded further including working for Portsmouth Family Intervention Project, supporting families with multiple and complex needs and at Southern Domestic Abuse Service.

My professional interests include working with loss and bereavement, birth & pregnancy trauma, and working creatively with clients.
